Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2007, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 190-194 doi: 10.1007/s11705-007-0035-3

Abstract: The separations of olefin/paraffin, aromatic/aliphatic hydrocarbons or olefin isomers using ionic liquids instead of volatile solvents have interested many researchers. Activity coefficients γ at infinite dilution of a solute in ionic liquid are generally used in the selection of solvents for extraction or extractive distillation. In fact, the measurement of γ by gas-liquid chromatography is a speedy and cost-saving method. Activity coefficients at infinite dilution of hydrocarbon solutes, such as alkanes, hexenes, alkylbenzenes, styrene, in 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([AMIM][BF]) and 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]), 1-isobutenyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([MPMIM][BF]) and [MPMIM][BF]-AgBF have been determined by gas-liquid chromatography using ionic liquids as stationary phase. The measurements were carried out at different temperatures from 298 to 318 K. The separating effects of these ionic liquids for alkanes/hexane, aliphatic hydrocarbons/benzene and hexene isomers have been discussed. The hydrophobic parameter, dipole element, frontier molecular orbital energy gap and hydration energy of these hydrocarbons were calculated with the PM3 semi-empirical quantum chemistry method. The quantitative relations among the computed structure parameters and activity coefficients at infinite dilution were also developed. The experimental activity coefficient data are consistent with the correlated and predicted results using QSPR models.

ZHANG Jian, Lu Yifeng, JING Yuming, ZHANG Bo, ZHANG Chenglu, MENG Fei, ZHANG Huayong

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 3,   Pages 306-310 doi: 10.1007/s11783-008-0057-1

Abstract: To evaluate the ecological effects of lakeshore wetland rehabilitation on the eastern route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, species composition, coverage, height, and biomass of wetland communities at 22 sites of the study area on the shore of Nansi Lake in April and May 2007 were investigated. The wetlands under investigation were divided into platform fields, transition zones, and shallow water zones according to differences in elevations, water levels, and human activities. The species richness index, Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson index, and Pielou Evenness index were adopted to delineate and discuss the ecological effects of lakeshore wetland rehabilitation in 22 quadrates. Results showed that the species richness of the wetland areas after 2 years’ rehabilitation amounted to 47 of 24 families, higher than 25 of 20 families in areas without rehabilitation. The biodiversity index and abundance index of rehabilitated areas were also higher than those of platform fields and fish ponds where there was no rehabilitation. In addition, the Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson index, and community evenness index of platform fields in rehabilitated wetland areas were 1.619, 0.745, and 0.860, respectively, higher than those of the platform fields before rehabilitating. The results suggested that the constructed lakeshore wetland played an important role in protecting the diversity of species.

Heat and mass transfer of ammonia-water in falling film evaporator

Xianbiao BU, Weibin MA, Huashan LI

Frontiers in Energy 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 358-366 doi: 10.1007/s11708-011-0161-y

Abstract: To investigate the performance of heat and mass transfer of ammonia-water during the process of falling film evaporation in vertical tube evaporator, a mathematical model of evaporation process was presented, the solution of which that needed a coordinate transformation was based on stream function. The computational results from the mathematical model were validated with experimental data. Subsequently, a series of parameters, such as velocity, film thickness and concentration, etc., were obtained from the mathematical model. Calculated results show that the average velocity and the film thickness change dramatically at the entrance region when <100 mm, while they vary slightly with the tube length in the fully developed region when >100 mm. The average concentration of the solution reduces along the tube length because of evaporation, but the reducing tendency becomes slow. It can be concluded that there is an optimalβrelationship between the tube length and the electricity generated. The reason for the bigger concentration gradient in the direction is that the smooth tube is chosen in the calculation. It is suggested that the roll-worked enhanced tube or other enhanced tube can reduce the concentration gradient in the film thickness direction and enhance the heat and mass transfer rate.

Temporality-enhanced knowledgememory network for factoid question answering Article

Xin-yu DUAN, Si-liang TANG, Sheng-yu ZHANG, Yin ZHANG, Zhou ZHAO, Jian-ru XUE, Yue-ting ZHUANG, Fei WU

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2018, Volume 19, Issue 1,   Pages 104-115 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1700788

Abstract: Question answering is an important problem that aims to deliver specific answers to questions posed by humans in natural language. How to efficiently identify the exact answer with respect to a given question has become an active line of research. Previous approaches in factoid question answering tasks typically focus on modeling the semantic relevance or syntactic relationship between a given question and its corresponding answer. Most of these models suffer when a question contains very little content that is indicative of the answer. In this paper, we devise an architecture named the temporality-enhanced knowledge memory network (TE-KMN) and apply the model to a factoid question answering dataset from a trivia competition called quiz bowl. Unlike most of the existing approaches, our model encodes not only the content of questions and answers, but also the temporal cues in a sequence of ordered sentences which gradually remark the answer. Moreover, our model collaboratively uses external knowledge for a better understanding of a given question. The experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves better performance than several state-of-the-art methods.

RGS16 regulated by let-7c-5p promotes glioma progression by activating PI3K-AKT pathway

Frontiers of Medicine 2023, Volume 17, Issue 1,   Pages 143-155 doi: 10.1007/s11684-022-0929-y

Abstract: Gliomas are the most common central nervous system tumours; they are highly aggressive and have a poor prognosis. RGS16 belongs to the regulator of G-protein signalling (RGS) protein family, which plays an important role in promoting various cancers, such as breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer. Moreover, previous studies confirmed that let-7c-5p, a well-known microRNA, can act as a tumour suppressor to regulate the progression of various tumours by inhibiting the expression of its target genes. However, whether RGS16 can promote the progression of glioma and whether it is regulated by miR let-7c-5p are still unknown. Here, we confirmed that RGS16 is upregulated in glioma tissues and that high expression of RGS16 is associated with poor survival. Ectopic deletion of RGS16 significantly suppressed glioma cell proliferation and migration both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, RGS16 was validated as a direct target gene of miR let-7c-5p. The overexpression of miR let-7c-5p obviously downregulated the expression of RGS16, and knocking down miR let-7c-5p had the opposite effect. Thus, we suggest that the suppression of RGS16 by miR let-7c-5p can promote glioma progression and may serve as a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in glioma.

Huashan LI, Xianbiao BU, Lingbao WANG, Zhenneng LU, Weibin MA

Frontiers in Energy 2012, Volume 6, Issue 4,   Pages 356-360 doi: 10.1007/s11708-012-0207-9

Abstract: Composite adsorbents of CaCl and sawdust prepared by carbonization for adsorption refrigeration with NH as refrigerant are tested, and the effects of carbonization temperature on the sorption capacity and rate are analyzed. The results show that the amount of pores in the sawdust of the composite adsorbents carbonized, apart from the content of CaCl , is the most dominant factor influencing the NH sorption on composite adsorbents. The optimum carbonization temperature is 700°C, which gives the maximal NH sorption capacity as high as 0.774 kg of NH per kg of the composite, and the specific cooling power is approximately between 338 and 869 W/kg with the cycle duration varying from 5 to 20 minutes. The present study demonstrates that the composite absorbent of CaCl and sawdust prepared by carbonization is more promising and competitive for adsorption refrigeration application.

Identification and ranking of the risky organic contaminants in the source water of the Danjiangkou reservoir

Qingwei BU, Donghong WANG, Zijian WANG, Junnong GU

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 42-53 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0499-y

Abstract: The Danjiangkou reservoir was selected to provide the source water for the middle routes of the South to North Water Transfer Project, which has provoked many environmental concerns. To date, investigations of water contamination of the source water of the Danjiangkou reservoir with organic micro-pollutants have been limited. This study was conducted to identify and rank organic contaminants that pose risks in the Danjiangkou reservoir. To this end, the Chemical Hazard Evaluation and Management Strategies (CHEMS-1) approach was adapted to integrate the deconvolution technology of qualitative identifying contaminants for site-specific environmental matrices. The samples were screened for the presence of 1093 contaminants using deconvolution technologies and the hazard values of the identified contaminants were calculated using the adapted CHEMS-1 approach according to their hazardous properties and occurrence in source water. The results showed that 46 contaminants from 1093 targets were present in Danjiangkou water, 23 of which appeared at frequencies higher than 50%, and 15 of which were identified as priorities. Over half (53%) of the high-ranked contaminants were polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), with chrysene ranked highest on the list. Health risk assessment of the top-ranked PAHs was conducted and revealed that cancer risks of PAHs detected in the source water of Danjiangkou to different populations ranged from 10 to 10 , indicating a low cancer risk to consumers. The results of this study indicated that the adapted CHEMS-1 approach was feasible for site-specific screening of organic contaminants to identify and rank potential priority pollutants.

Recent developments in novel silica-based optical fibers Special Feature on Optoelectronic Devices and Inte

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2019, Volume 20, Issue 4,   Pages 481-489 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900017

Abstract:

We have summarized our recent work in the area of novel silica-based optical fibers, which can be classified into two types: silica optical fiber doped with special elements including Bi, Al, and Ce, and micro-structured multi-core fibers. For element-doped optical fiber, the Bi/Al co-doped silica fibers could exhibit a fluorescence spectrum covering the wavelength range between 1000 and 1400 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 150 nm, which enables its use in fiber amplifiers and laser systems. The Ce-doped fiber’s center wavelengths of excitation and emission are about 340 and 430 nm, respectively. The sapphire-derived fiber (SDF) with high alumina dopant concentration in the core can form mullite through heating and cooling with arc-discharge treatment. This SDF can be further developed for an intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric that can withstand 1200 °C, which allows it to be used in high-temperature sensing applications. Owing to the strong evanescent field, microstructured multi-core fiber can be used in a wide range of applications in biological fiber optic sensing, chemical measurement, and interference-related devices. Coaxial-core optical fiber is another novel kind of silica-based optical fiber that has two coaxial waveguide cores and can be used for optical trapping and micro-particle manipulation by generating a highly focused conical optical field. The recent developments of these novel fibers are discussed.

A sampling method based on URL clustering for fast web accessibility evaluation

Meng-ni ZHANG,Can WANG,Jia-jun BU,Zhi YU,Yu ZHOU,Chun CHEN

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2015, Volume 16, Issue 6,   Pages 449-456 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1400377

Abstract: When evaluating the accessibility of a large website, we rely on sampling methods to reduce the cost of evaluation. This may lead to a biased evaluation when the distribution of checkpoint violations in a website is skewed and the selected samples do not provide a good representation of the entire website. To improve sampling quality, stratified sampling methods first cluster web pages in a site and then draw samples from each cluster. In existing stratified sampling methods, however, all the pages in a website need to be analyzed for clustering, causing huge I/O and computation costs. To address this issue, we propose a novel page sampling method based on URL clustering for web accessibility evaluation, namely URLSamp. Using only the URL information for stratified page sampling, URLSamp can efficiently scale to large websites. Meanwhile, by exploiting similarities in URL patterns, URLSamp cluster pages by their generating scripts and can thus effectively detect accessibility problems from web page templates. We use a data set of 45 web sites to validate our method. Experimental results show that our URLSamp method is both effective and efficient for web accessibility evaluation.
